citation : Mrs. Shameem Azad, known as Lata Mangeshkar of Kashmir, her melodious voice has made her a household name in the State. She gave a new dimension to Kashmiri light and folk music by reviving old classic-pieces of music and poetry to their original form. A post-graduate from Allahabad University in Indian classical music, was appointed as lecturer in Government College for women, M.A. Road, Srinagar in 1978. Mrs. Azad has a unique style of presentation of poetic compositions in different languages like Bengla, Telugu, Marathi, Rajasthani, Gojri, Ladakhi, Dogri, Kashmiri and Urdu. She has the distinction of being the first female playback singer from Kashmir valley to have sung in various feature films and television serials. In recent times, she has written and sung some of the best musical hits of the State like “Aao Kadam Badhayain”, “Khushal Kashir”, “Mere Jannat Mere Kashmir”, “Jannat-a-banazir”, “Nai Subha”, “Wohi Khuda Hai”, etc. She has been honoured with various awards including the prestigious Padma Shri, Samapa Vistasta Award, Radio Kashmir Srinagar Golden Jubilee Celebration Award, Mehjoor Award, Kalpana Chawla Award for Women in Delhi, Lal-ded Award in Pune etc. In recognition of her outstanding contribution in the field of Arts, the State Government confers on Mrs. Shameem Azad, the State Award for Performing Arts for the year 2010.
